He came home with mosquito bites and scratches.

Blades of grass littered his lunch box. He was tired at the end of each day with a smile on his face, stories to share, new friends and a big confidence boost.

Outside, away from screens and too many rules, he was free to play and use his imagination. He and his friends had to problem solve, strategize and work together.

We may never be able to fully measure how these types of outdoor experiences impact our kids, but what I do know is that I saw my son grow mentally, emotionally and socially in ways I did not expect this summer.

One of the locations they visited was a park developed nearly 60 years ago, a time when his grandfather was a boy. This summer, my son joined generations of kids who ran, played and laughed here. This was a spot funded by the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), a place that decades ago people saw the potential to develop for the enjoyment of their children, their children’s children and so on.

To these people and others who have worked over the years to create spaces where people can gather and enjoy the outdoors — thank you. These are not just plots of land where our kids play, they are the backdrops for priceless experiences, friendships, life lessons, confidence and joy.

The LWCF is just one tool in the toolbox when it comes to preserving, maintaining and expanding our public lands. Unfortunately, many of these tools are being pulled from the toolbox and tampered with, hindering their ability to be used.

Last week, we celebrated the fifth anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act, which secured permanent funding for LWCF. In 2020, a bipartisan Congress passed the Great American Outdoors Act, permanently reauthorizing and fully funding the LWCF with money from offshore energy revenues.

But, in his 2026 budget, the president has proposed slashing LWCF funding by 43% and diverting $387 million away from conservation and public access. This could be a devastating blow to a program that builds parks, playgrounds and ball fields in every corner of the country.

Meanwhile, another tool in our public lands toolbox is also at risk. Federal officials want to roll back the Roadless Rule, which protects about 6 million acres of public lands in Montana. If this happens, it could open up some of our most wild places to roadbuilding and logging, threatening wildlife habitats, clean water and recreational areas.

This summer, the threat of a federal public lands sell-off hit a nerve. Across the country, people rallied against Utah Sen. Mike Lee’s proposal to sell off public lands across the West. They called their representatives in Washington, D.C. They posted to social media. They fought back. And they won. Sen. Lee withdrew his provision in late June.

But while that battle was won, the war against our public lands continues. If the sell-off of public lands was a shot across the bow, other maneuvers to undermine funding sources and rollback rules that protect some of most wild places are blows that are just as damaging.

We must continue to fight against these efforts to chip away at our public lands, and we must continue to utilize these places responsibly and teach our children the value of a life lived outdoors. Whether a kid hikes in the backcountry or bikes to their neighborhood park, these public lands belong to them. Let’s share the special places with them so they see their value and continue to pass them on to future generations.

Our public lands are the legacy we pass on to our children. Let’s help them understand their value so they are here for their children to enjoy.

Erin Schattauer Benedict is the Montana State Director for Mountain Mamas. She is raising her son to enjoy and appreciate the outdoors.

by Erin Benedict This summer, my son went to a camp that had him outside all day long, running between trees and through a creek, capturing flags and battling with cardboard swords.
